Salthil is a seaside resort area on the fringes of Galway, and it’s a popular place for tourists—and locals, for that matter—to while away a few hours. Aside from its shops, restaurants and hotels, the primary attraction here is the promenade, known as the Salthil Prom.
This is actually the longest seaside promenade in Ireland. It follows the curve of the Bay of Galway and takes in several sandy beaches along the way. It’s a popular venue for jogging and leisurely walks. Likewise, it serves as an excellent retreat after a day of sightseeing in the city.
You can easily reach Salthil Prom on foot from the city centre. Start at Wolfe Tone Bridge and head south, following the bay past Nimmo’s Pier and through South Park. This is where the Prom picks up, and you can continue down to the Blackrock Diving Board. It’s a standing tradition to kick the wall here before you turn around here and head back into the city.
